Migrating...

Posterous was a wonderful resource and repository during my studies on learning with online social media. I am moving on, but didn't want to lose the gems included here.

Find my new virtual home at www.mtcleroux.com. It leads to many, many fascinating little hidden chambers.

See you there.

Using Web 2.0 with Language Learners

Media_http4bpblogspot_mxcnj

A blog post prompted by questions from teachers on how to use Web 2.0 tools for language learning. The short answer is, of course: it depends. Depending on learner needs and facilities, some ideas are included here.

Man versus Machine (or: Tummeling 101)

My latest blog post follows critical evaluation (my own!) of my current research. Bottom line: People are the heart (pun intended) of technology.

Tummeling is the term used by geek standup Heather Gold and web standards guru Kevin Marks to describe the art of social engagement. Read all bout it.

Teenagers Digg #Blogging. NOT.

Media_httpstaticarste_fvbgz

The latest research from the Pew Internet/American Life project shows that the rates of teenagers blogging have halved in the past year, and the number of those commenting on blogs have dropped significantly. The weapon of choice for teenagers is the social network, with FaceBook still leading the pack.

From the perspective of education, the first thing that strikes me about this is that it is an opportunity lost. Blogging presents staggering opportunities for learning. On second thoughts, though, it is not so much an opportunity lost as a new world gained. Apparently social networking is more attractive to younger people. Right. Good. Now - how do we harness this for learning? The answer may be social networks for learning, or a more sophisticated hybrid platform.

The fact is, I, too prefer social networks to blogs, simply thanks to their usability, interactivity and constant, byte-sized updates. Perhaps the killer app of the future will capitalise on this.

UPDATE: Could said killer app be Google Buzz

Media_httpmediasmashi_zjvhr

This article, crammed with 25 outstanding videos on user experience, was as much of a revelation as a wake-up call to me. Over the past months I have been pouring heart and soul into a very worthy online project, yet it has not caught on. have known this at the back of my mind for a while, but had not formulated it. User Experience (UX) may be the missing link. Guess I have 16 hours of video to watch.

Lifelogging and Self Tracking - The Steve Rubel Lifestream

In this third of three instalments entitled Three Ideas for 2010, Steve Rubel looks into total lifestreaming.

This reminded me why I started a Posterous in the first place: to track random thoughts that might not fit in on my professional blog. That said, I've been contemplating the gradual relocation of my blog altogether, but a few pieces of the puzzle are still missing. What I want is not yet another online presence, but one that brings it all together. I

Having blogged for almost five years, two of them strictly for work and study, I can see what a great resource a blog becomes over time. Add in more functionalities, and we really are talking lifestreaming.

It's thriling... but it needs to be simpler. Dontcha think?
